The spacious Countryman, and indeed all MINI 2018 models, have received across-the-board, standard-equipment upgrades, including a rearview camera, Rear Park Distance Control, redesigned windshield wiper/turn signal stalks, a redesigned fuel gauge and Attentiveness Assistant, a feature that alerts drivers when it detects drowsiness. The busy MINI engineers swapped out the driving-mode ring-style selector for a toggle switch and moved the on/off switch for the optional Head-Up Display. They also removed manual lumbar support from some upholstery combinations and rejiggered the pricing scheme for 2018 paint colors. In package news, the Technology Package now includes Parallel Parking Assistant and Apple CarPlay, and the Excitement Package’s center-instrument LED ring displays warnings in green, yellow and red. Here’s one more: The Convenience Package got rid of that annoying left-side elastic strap in the cargo area.

Two new Countrymen models recently became available. The first is the John Cooper Works (JCW) Countryman, which is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine that routes 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters and launch control. The new JCW Countryman, an all-wheel-drive vehicle with a limited-slip differential, is 1.3 inches wider, 8 inches longer and has a 2.9-inch longer wheelbase than the previous version. The JCW features red-caliper Brembo brakes, a standard Dynamic Damper Control suspension, an optional sport suspension, 18- or 19-inch wheels, and upgrades to the sport seats, headliner, gear lever and steering wheel.

Lastly, the new MINI Cooper S E Countryman All4 Plug-In Hybrid is an AWD vehicle equipped with an electric motor and a twin-turbo engine. A lithium-ion battery powers the motor, but the Countryman operates perfectly well on gasoline alone. Otherwise, the All4 Plug-In is similar to the Cooper S Countryman.
