2018 MINI Countryman vs 2018 MINI Clubman
Serving Wappingers Falls, Poughkeepsie, and Milton, NY
Birthed in the 2000s, the Countryman and the Clubman are two of the larger cars offered by BMW’s MINI brand. Although classified as subcompact vehicles, they help break the cramped-interior stereotype of this class by both adopting a hatchback design. For 2018, the Countryman is still fresh into its second generation of production and the Clubman is possible midway through its own second production cycle.
Performance
The standard engine that propels the 2018 Countryman and Clubman is a 1.5-liter twin-turbocharged 3-cylinder that produces an output of 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Select trims, though, go with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that, depending on the model, produces 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque or 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Three transmissions are available: a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed auto, and an 8-speed auto. The Clubman’s top-level John Cooper Works ALL4 trim - which uses the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder - is unique with its 8-speed sport-oriented automatic transmission, which comes with paddle shifters for electronic enablement of manual gear shifting.
Although front-wheel drive is standard, you can opt for an all-wheel drive for enhanced traction; such models would bear the "ALL4" suffix" to indicate the all-wheel drivetrain. Optional on either vehicle is Dynamic Damper Control, which allows you to control its suspension to adjust your ride to fit your present mood: whether you crave corner-conquering speed or want a relaxed fuel-efficient ride.
Appearance
The 2018 MINI Countryman has the standard four doors expected from a vehicle of its type. The 2018 MINI Clubman, on the other hand, has six: four on the sides and two that comprise the liftgate, thus adopting a type of heightened access similar to a commercial van. Standard exterior features include white turn signals, heated side mirrors, and automatic switch-on ability for driving in the dark or with minimal outside light.
The Countryman, which is more styled as a mini SUV, comes with roof rails for extra cargo carrying capability, and it also comes with a panoramic moonroof. Also added on the Countryman are daytime driving lights to increase conspicuity to other motorists. You can spruce up either vehicle with additions or upper-level options like a liftgate spoiler, bonnet strips, chrome accents, and LED headlights and front fog lights.
Safety
As relatively small as the 2018 MINI Countryman and 2018 MINI Clubman are, they each get eight airbags; some larger vehicles don’t have as many. Dual front impact airbags face the driver and front passenger, and protecting their lower limbs are two knee airbags. Two airbags are mounted on the front seats for side impact, and two side curtains are installed on the roof for head protection of all occupants.
